The Governors run the school as a museum and are working towards making the historic library collection available to the public. They also manage the remaining estate of the Foundation to raise funds for grants for the young people of the Ancient Parish of Hawkshead, per the charitable objects of the Foundation. The Charity Commission's scheme for the Foundation is here.
The Foundation's Charitable Aims: 1. To make a difference to the young people of the Ancient Parish of Hawkshead by providing financial support to assist their further education and their entry into working life. 2. To maintain the museum in the old school building for the benefit of the public: to inform visitors of the history of HGS and its importance in education in the North of England, and to contribute to the visitor economy of the Parish. 3. To conserve and share the library so that it can be used to educate visitors about the nature of a historic grammar school education, about historic printed books, how they were made, published and used, and for it to be conserved and accessible as a resource for academic researchers.
